Cancer survival

Cancer survival information on this page is estimated using the net survival statistic. Net survival measures the probability of surviving a particular cancer diagnosis for a given period of time, accounting for other causes of death.  It is the preferred method for comparing cancer survival in population-based cancer studies because it adjusts for the fact that different populations may have different levels of background risk of death.  The net survival of a specific cancer can vary by many factors including age, sex and stage at diagnosis. The population-based net survival estimates provide average estimates of five-year net survival, and do not reflect any individual's prognosis.
